Santa Monica Residence
This project is the restoration and renovation of a 1924 John Byers house in Santa Monica, California. It is example of a Spanish Colonial Adobe style house from early in his career. The house suffered a series of unfortunate remodeling over the years but the massing and detail of the house remained intact. The goal of the project was to being the house back to its original quality, and renovate the interior in a fresh and contemporary manner, that pays homage to the house’s stylistic roots. The footprint of the original house was maintained to preserve the original integrity. New custom pattern Terra Cotta tiles were produced for the interior floors and exterior terraces. The Kitchen volume was opened up with a truss and beamed ceiling, and color was added with a tall blue and white tile wainscot. Custom light fixtures, including gas lanterns on the covered front porch were styled after historic precedents. New landscaping compliments the house, and a new tile fountain was added in the Courtyard.
