What a wonderful assignment. ‘Realizing something like this in a monumental environment is not easy. There’s a lot involved,” said Thomas van Nielen. This cultural heritage on Amsterdam’s Keizersgracht has been beautifully adapted to the times by STUDIO JEROEN VAN ZWETSELAAR without hurting history. Old and new are intertwined elegantly and naturally. The result is stunning.

The first stone was laid in the seventeenth century. So a very old house and full of asymmetry, very disjointed. Nothing was in the lead, which certainly made this project challenging. But through years of experience, Jeroen van Zwetselaar’s design has been executed in detail. A whole again emerged. Thomas van Nielen: “This also has to do with my working method. I let the interior designer clearly indicate the materialization. All brands and types are clear in advance. I also ask the interior designer for detailed and dimensioned drawings. In this way, In Toom prevents unsound work.’

This luxury property was clearly not tackled by handymen. But the work of professionals. The cabinets were custom made with steel profiles and walnut and placed appropriately. The work on the walls and painting are also of a very high standard.

The showpiece of the house, the old atrium, has been restored to its former style under the guidance of In Toom. By the way, this also applies to the beautiful staircase. This had six coats of paint on it. The staircase was sanded bare, revealing the century-old oak beams. Then the staircase was treated with monumental wax.

This project was tricky because it required working in a historic building in the heart of Amsterdam. Thomas van Nielen comments, “We faced many challenges. But thanks to my working method where I like to be on top of things, the project was realized according to agreements. Again, this ensures satisfied clients and an interior designer who loves working with In Toom!’
