Transformation of a monumental farm in Zwolle
This characteristic farmhouse is located just outside the center of Zwolle. The farm is adjacent to a beautiful park, as a showroom of the IJssel landscape, and since 1832 the farm has been indicated here on the cadastral map. We have transformed the part, the space where the cows used to stand, into a modern living space. In its original state there was a front house where life took place. The wish was to thoroughly tackle the former cowshed and make it the heart of the farm. All this while retaining old elements in combination with modern materials.
The old supporting structure with the trusses and trusses have remained intact and now give the warm original atmosphere of a farm. The wooden trusses have also been given a new function. They now support a walkway that connects the front house with the master bedroom. This master bedroom with spacious bathroom and walk-in closet is located above the fitness room at the rear of the “new” part.
The wish was an uncluttered space with a large kitchen and a sitting area. An important factor here is the creation of light in the previously dark space. The light now enters through an enormous facade of 4.5 meters high and enamelled steel. In combination with the slats, this creates a spectacular play of light. The facade also provides a beautiful natural connection to the terrace. Skylights have also been installed that provide beautiful daylight.
In order to maintain peace in the design, three basic elements have been used: concrete, steel and wood. This is clearly reflected in the custom-made concrete staircase with oak steps.
